How to Prepare a Drawing for CNC Machining Quotation

The details that help a manufacturer review a part and return a useful quote.

Dimensional reference on a manufactured surface

A good quotation package helps a manufacturer understand the part’s function as well as its shape. A 3D model is useful for geometry, while a drawing communicates requirements that a model may not show clearly.

Send the current model and drawing

Use a STEP file for the solid model and a PDF drawing for dimensions, notes, and revision control. Confirm that both files describe the same revision. If the design is still in development, say so and identify the features that are likely to change.

Specify the purchasing details

Include material and temper, quantity, finish, desired delivery window, and whether repeat orders are expected. If an alternative material or finish is acceptable, state the limits. Clear flexibility can create better options than a vague request to “quote as shown.”

Mark critical features

Call out mating dimensions, threads, surface requirements, and inspection documentation needs. Use datums consistently. Avoid adding tight limits to every dimension when only a few surfaces control performance.

Before sending

Check that units, revision, material, quantity, and contact information are present. Add a short note about the assembly or purpose of the part. The quote can then focus on the real manufacturing questions instead of chasing missing information.

A practical RFQ package

Give each part a clear number and revision. Include a STEP model and a matching PDF drawing where available, plus material, finish, quantity and required arrival date. A supplier should not have to infer whether the model or drawing controls a conflicting dimension.

Required arrival date and destination: ___

Separate essential information from open questions

If the grade or process is undecided, say so. Describe the part’s function and operating environment instead of selecting a material without a reason. Ask for alternatives and identify which requirements cannot change. This makes the first conversation useful even before the design is complete.

Before sharing confidential drawings

Discuss an NDA and an appropriate transfer method first. Redacting a customer name is not the same as clearing a drawing for release. The website accepts PDF, ZIP, STEP and STP up to 10 MB; contact us for larger packages.
